Importing furniture and fittings from China

We source residential and contract furniture: tables and chairs, sofas and upholstery, beds and slatted frames, wardrobes, shelving and sideboards, office furniture, and garden furniture in aluminium, rattan-look or acacia wood.

In fittings and furniture components we cover hinges, drawer slides (including soft-close), handles, furniture feet, connectors, gas struts and mounting systems, mostly from the metal clusters around Ningbo and Guangzhou.

For ready-to-assemble (RTA) flatpack furniture we organise matching fitting sets, assembly instructions and multilingual inserts, so goods arrive assembly-ready and return-proof at the customer.

Furniture carries no CE mark but is subject to GPSR and the relevant EN standards. Seating is tested against EN 12520 and EN 12521 for strength and durability, storage furniture against EN 14749, with tip-over safety (anti-tip) on tall units increasingly required.

A central issue is formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels such as MDF and chipboard. The EU limits under regulation 2023/1464 (i.e. E1/E0 classes) must be met. We require corresponding emission tests and, for upholstery, check REACH-compliant foams and fabrics.

Solid wood brings its own risks: residual moisture, warping and cracking. We check wood drying and, where the market demands it, FSC chain-of-custody evidence and compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

Furniture is volume-intensive, so container maths is central. We choose construction and packaging so models stack efficiently and a 40-foot container is fully used, which often decides landed cost more than the unit price alone.

Before the run we have a sample built and check stability, surfaces, fitting function and the assembly instructions. For tested models we document the EN test reports and emission values.

In production we check dimensional accuracy, surface quality, fitting assembly and carton strength by AQL. For flatpack we add trial assemblies, because missing screws or misaligned drilling patterns are the most common cause of returns.

With furniture, the combination of construction, packaging and volume decides profitability. We optimise that chain on the ground and prevent costly mistakes such as oversized cartons or inadequate edge protection.
