The ease of entry is also the trap. Because so many buyers order from the same reference designs, the product that succeeds on the shelf wins on brand, quality, and compliance — not on a novelty that a hundred other importers also have.

Buyers who import kitchen appliances from China work across a familiar range: kettles, blenders, toasters, coffee machines, food processors, and the current star, air fryers. The first decision is OEM (your own design and tooling) versus private label (your brand on the factory's platform), which sets the cost, MOQ, and lead time.

Whichever route, the safety and certification work has to be scoped before production. A kitchen appliance that cannot be CE-marked correctly for its destination cannot be sold, so the compliance conversation belongs at the quotation stage, not after the container arrives.

An air fryer OEM manufacturer can private-label an existing platform fast, which is why the category exploded — but it also means many brands are shipping near-identical products. The way to stand out is in the details a spec sheet hides: even heating and temperature accuracy, the quality and coating of the basket, controls and preset software, and the reliability of the heating element and fan.

Because the platform is shared, insist that the exact model you brand is the one that was tested and certified, and lock the bill of materials so a cheaper element or coating is not quietly substituted once orders are flowing.

A mains appliance must satisfy the Low Voltage Directive for electrical safety and the EMC Directive for electromagnetic compatibility, so LVD and EMC compliance for appliances is the baseline CE requirement. RoHS restricts hazardous substances, and the ErP/Ecodesign and energy-labelling rules apply to relevant products. The GS mark is voluntary but valued in Germany as an independent safety signal.

The unglamorous detail that trips importers is the plug: an appliance bound for Germany needs the correct Schuko (CEE 7/4) plug and the right voltage configuration for 230 V / 50 Hz — not a UK or US fitting swapped at the last minute. Confirm the exact model shipped, plug included, is the one that holds the certificate.

The essential check is that the certificate matches the goods. It is common to be shown a compliance report for one model and shipped a slightly different, cheaper build, so verify that the certified model and the production model are the same appliance.

Safety features are where corners get cut — thermal cut-outs, over-temperature protection, and the quality of the mains cord. A pre-shipment inspection that includes a functional and safety check, done while the goods are still in China, is the last cheap chance to catch a fault before it becomes a recall.
